Fly Patterns of Umpqua Feather
Merchants
The World’s 1,500 Best Flies
Second Edition
By Randall Kaufmann
With an Introduction by Dave WhitlockThe first
edition of Fly Patterns of Umpqua Feather Merchants was
published in 1995 and its 1,100 patterns quickly became the
standard reference for fly tyers. The first printing quickly
sold out and in 1998 the second edition was published with 1,500
patterns. It too was soon out of print.
At the time, it was a truly unique, one-of-a-kind book. 1,500
individual macro color photos depicted the world’s most popular
and effective flies. Bass to bluefish, steelhead to stripers,
micro nymphs to huge sailfish flies, and everything in between.
There was nothing else like it.
All 1,500 fly patterns were in production by Umpqua Feather
Merchants. Many were patterns developed by Umpqua’s signature
tyers, and autobiographies of fifteen of their “best selling”
innovators were featured. These included Theo Bakelaar, Tim
Borski, Andy Burk, Bob Clouser, Larry Dahlberg, Randall
Kaufmann, Lefty Kreh, Gary LaFontaine, Mike Lawson, Craig
Mathews, Mike Mercer, Bob Popovics, Ed Schroeder, Shane Stalcup
and Dave Whitlock.
Fly Patterns of Umpqua Feather Merchants has been out of
print for several years but it remains one of the most sought
after titles in fly fishing, often commanding triple its
original cost of $49.95.
Randall was constantly asked if he would publish another fly
pattern book. Randall’s latest collection of flies, titled
Fly Patterns, encompasses
the plethora of new tyers, patterns, materials and suppliers
that have emerged during the last 10 years. The new
Fly Patterns book contains
3,600 flies, some classics (about 600 from Fly Patterns of
Umpqua Feather Merchants), but mostly modern innovations
from over 300 renown tyers that read like a who’s who of the
fly-tying world, including Bill Black, Dan Blanton, Brian Chan,
Bob Clouser, Ralph Cutter, Dan Delekta, Jack Dennis, Rene’
Harrop, Bob Jacklin, Lefty Kreh, Mike Lawson, Craig Matthews,
Sylvester Nemes, Bob Quigley, Scott Sanchez, Shane Stalcup, Jim
Teeny, Lani Waller, Dave Whitlock, and dozens of other equally
talented tyers.
Fly Patterns includes
about 900 nymph, 135 emerger, 950 dry, 400 streamer, 500
steelhead, 225 warmwater, and 500 saltwater flies from such
noted suppliers as Doug’s Bugs, Idylwilde, Pacific Fly Group,
Riverborn Fly Company, Solitude Fly Company, Spirit River and of
course Umpqua Feather Merchants.
Ross Purnell, editor of Fly Fisherman Magazine, in
reviewing Fly Patterns noted that at the time of
publication in 1998, Fly Patterns of Umpqua Feather Merchants
seemed immense, but it now seems like a mere pamphlet compared
to this new, 478-page tome assembled by Randall and his wife,
Mary. Ross continues to state that “it is not hyperbole to say
this is the largest, most comprehensive fly pattern book ever
produced.”
